Contact Sheet Print: Gone, 1995/2023

This collage by Jim Goldberg assembles dozens of black-and-white and color contact sheet frames, layered with handwritten scrawls, paint, tape, and fragments of red and blue marks. Pulled from Coming and Going, the images chronicle moments from Goldberg’s life with Ruby—intimate, raw, and often fragmented. Some frames are overlaid with words like “GONE” or “SORRY,” while others show portraits, gestures, places, and objects frozen in grainy stills. The result is a visual diary of love, loss, and memory—a deeply personal archive where each frame contributes to a nonlinear story of presence and disappearance.
