The Story

In 1966, when Thomas Hoepker was a young staff photographer at STERN magazine, he was asked to cover a fight in London with the then-heavyweight champion of the world, Muhammad Ali. After documenting him for a few days there, Hoepker persuaded his editor that the story was bigger and followed Ali to Chicago, where this iconic image of his world-famous fist was taken. Over the course of a decade, Hoepker was given the opportunity to photograph Ali multiple times, allowing him to capture the man as well as the myth.
